UkrNS Conducts Webinar on Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis for Ukrainian NPPs
On March 31, 2026, a webinar was held to address the critical issues of Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) for Ukraine’s nuclear power plants. Organized by the Dnipro branch of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society with support from the Society’s Secretariat, the event brought together industry experts, scientists, and young specialists to discuss the implementation of international safety standards.
The keynote speaker was Dr. Mykhailo Dovbnich, Professor at NTU “Dnipro Polytechnic.” He presented the findings of extensive research conducted between 2022 and 2024 for the Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, and South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plants. During the session, participants explored the adaptation and practical application of IAEA standards within the Ukrainian context, which remains a vital component in ensuring the highest level of operational safety for NPPs.
Professor Dovbnich provided a detailed overview of the analysis results for the RAES, KhAES, and SUNPP sites. He placed particular emphasis on methods for developing integrated databases and the use of advanced software to estimate peak ground acceleration. The webinar showcased tools capable of modeling complex seismic scenarios, which serve as the foundation for informed engineering and design decisions.
Beyond current operations, the discussion also focused on the role of PSHA in Ukraine’s future reconstruction. The experts highlighted how this methodology can be applied to protect not only nuclear power plants but also other critical infrastructure and hydraulic structures across the country.
