40th Anniversary of the Chornobyl Disaster: Lessons of the Past for a Safe Future

April 26, 2026, marks the 40th anniversary of the accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant – a tragedy that changed the course of history, became a symbol of global nuclear danger, and at the same time an example of the courage, self-sacrifice, and professionalism of thousands of liquidators.

On this day, we honour the heroism of the specialists, scientists, energy workers and all those who, at the cost of their own health and lives, helped contain the consequences of the disaster. Their courage and professionalism became an example of responsibility before humanity.

Chornobyl is not only a tragedy of the past. It is also a symbol of strength, recovery and the ability to unite for the safety of future generations. Today, Ukraine is once again forced to fight for the safety of nuclear facilities. The damage to the Shelter Object as a result of terrorist russian attacks, as well as regular missile and drone flights near nuclear facilities, the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, create unprecedented risks of a new radiation accident not only for Ukraine, but for the whole of Europe. They remind us that the threats have not disappeared. On the contrary, they are taking on new forms.

That is why responsibility for nuclear safety today is shared by the entire world. The Ukrainian Nuclear Society expresses its sincere gratitude to all those who continue to work for safety today the specialists of the Chornobyl Zone, energy workers, scientists, the military and international partners.

We bow deeply to the liquidators of the Chornobyl accident – for their courage, self-sacrifice and invaluable contribution to preserving the lives and safety of millions of people.

May the memory of Chornobyl unite us, bring wisdom to our decisions and strength to our actions.
