Prospects for Nuclear Energy Development and Completion of Units No. 3 and No. 4 of Khmelnytskyi NPP Discussed in Netishyn
On March 11, 2025, the city of Netishyn — home to Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant — hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Prospects for Nuclear Energy Development. Completion of KhNPP Units 3 and 4: A Strategic Step Toward Energy Independence,” organized by the Ukrainian Nuclear Society.
The event was attended by Oleksandr Kopylenko, Member of the Ukrainian Parliament, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and Head of the National Commission for Radiation Protection of the Population of Ukraine, as well as representatives of the nuclear sector, local authorities, engineering and construction organizations, academic and educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and media. Faculty members and students of Ostroh Academy National University also joined the discussion.
Volodymyr Kholosha, President of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society, opening the event, emphasized the strategic importance of completing the new units for strengthening Ukraine’s energy security and ensuring a stable electricity supply under wartime conditions and during post-war recovery.
In his speech, Oleksandr Kopylenko noted that nuclear energy must be recognized as a key factor in rebuilding Ukraine and stressed the leading role of Khmelnytskyi NPP in this process.
Volodymyr Tsybulskyi, Head of the Netishyn branch of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society, focused on the crucial role of the local community and experts in implementing the project, highlighting the importance of partnership among industry, science, and education.
The roundtable featured key reports:
- Volodymyr Kholosha delivered a presentation on “The Strategic Importance of Completing KhNPP Units 3/4,” emphasizing the economic benefits of launching new capacities, their significance for the stability of Ukraine’s energy system, and reducing dependence on imported energy resources.
- Hennadii Samosei, Deputy Chief Engineer for New Units at KhNPP, and Serhii Kosenko, Deputy General Director of the “Atomproektengineering” Branch, presented an overview of the specifics of the construction process, current condition of equipment and structures.
- Oleksii Potravka, Director of Technological Design at KIEP JSC, provided a detailed report on construction and technical aspects of the project, including the results of surveys of existing structures.
- Andrii Koziura, General Director of Khmelnytskyi NPP, underlined that completing Units No. 3 and No. 4 is not only a necessity but also a strategic step that will enhance Ukraine’s energy independence and become a driving force for its economic development.
In conclusion, participants of the roundtable reaffirmed the necessity of completing Khmelnytskyi NPP Units 3 and 4 as a crucial step toward the country’s energy independence and security, stressing the need for joint efforts of the state, business, and civil society to implement this vital project.
