A meeting of the Scientific and Analytical Section of the UkrNS

On August 14, 2025, a meeting of the Scientific and Analytical Section of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society (UkrNS) was held under the chairmanship of the newly appointed Co-Chair of the Section, Oleksandr Mazurok, Head of the UkrNS Kyiv Branch on the basis of the Energy Safety Group.

The meeting was attended by UkrNS President Volodymyr Kholosha, representatives of leading enterprises and scientific institutions of the sector, including the Atomprojectengineering and Scientific and Technical Center branches of JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom,” the Institute for Nuclear Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the National Science Center “Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology,” Energy Safety Group, as well as members of the Society’s Secretariat.

During the meeting, six priority areas of activity for 2025–2027 were approved:

  1. Import substitution and diversification – introduction of new fuel for VVER-440 and VVER-1000, development of domestic reactor components, and replacement of imported spare parts and assemblies.
  2. New construction and innovative technologies – preparations for the construction of KhNPP-3 and KhNPP-4, implementation of SMR and AP1000 technologies.
  3. Research reactors – ensuring fuel supply, continued operation or decommissioning of the Kyiv and Kharkiv reactors, and identification of new projects.
  4. Regulatory and technical support and materials science – harmonization of the regulatory framework with international standards, introduction of advanced welding technologies and new materials.
  5. Development of scientific potential and young professionals – participation in international summer schools and internships, publications, and grant programs.
  6. Enhancement of safety and ageing management – modernization of safety systems and implementation of life extension programs for power units.

For each area, dedicated working groups will be established to prepare analytical materials and proposals for the development of Ukraine’s nuclear energy sector.

A separate agenda item was the preparation of an appeal to the IAEA regarding the termination of the Russian Federation’s participation as a partner in international-level events. The initiative was proposed by Oleksandr Menzul, a member of the UkrNS Rivne Branch and Mayor of the city of Varash. The appeal was first introduced during the reporting and election conference in June 2025 and has now been finalized and approved for submission to international partners and the IAEA.
