Fifteen years ago, July 16, 2001 Zaporizhzhya NPP obtained a license of the State Committee for Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine to enter the dry spent fuel storage facility (SFSF) in pilot operation.
Zaporizhzhya NPP the first in Ukraine has implemented a system of dry storage of spent nuclear fuel for VVER-1000 reactors.
The SFSF complex is designed for 380 ventilated storage containers that can hold more than 9,000 spent fuel assemblies. Such a large number of containers is sufficient to accept spent nuclear fuel for the whole period of the Zaporizhzhya NPP, taking into account the extension of the operation of the plant units.
Complex SFSF is designed to operate for 50 years (with an option to extend the shelf life of containers up to 100 years). To date, the site 137 containers are installed.
15 years of observations that are continuously conducted during the operation of SFSF, show that all the preliminary calculations regarding safety are confirmed.
